I am a regular public speaker about Shanghai history, including regular presentations for expat groups, foreign business schools and private tours of China. Old Shanghai presentations are often used as ice-breaker for corporate seminars, as well as part of the briefing for the city.
Shanghai 1842-1941 – The story of an extraordinary city (1 and ½ to 2 hours)
The arrival of the foreign traders and armies in Shanghai in 1842 changed the destiny of this city. Within and around the concessions, the spectacular growth of the city transformed it from a Chinese coastal harbor to the largest city of Asia. The presentation uses many pictures and visuals to tell the story of the city and many of its famous inhabitants, taking the audience through a time travel.

Shanghai 1842–1941 – Itinéraire d’une ville gâtée (1 heure 30 à 2 heures)
L’arrivée des étrangers, soldats ou commerçants, transforma le destin de Shanghai. A l’intérieur et autour des concessions, la croissance spectaculaire de la ville la métamorphosa d’un simple port côtier de la Mer de Chine à la plus grande métropole d’Asie. La présentation utilise de nombreux photos et documents visuels pour évoquer l’histoire et l’atmosphère de la ville et de quelqu’uns de ses habitants fameux, entraînant les spectateurs dans un voyage dans le temps.
Hugues Martin intervient régulièrement comme présentateur sur le sujet, notamment dans le cadre du MBA de EM Lyon. Cette présentation est souvent utilisée comme introduction à la ville dans le cas d’un séminaire ou d’une visite corporate de la ville.
